2 Ways To Make Your Doors More Disabled Friendly

When you have a disability that requires you to have a mobility device like a walker or wheelchair, it can be difficult for you to open doors and to get around in your house. If you are thinking of building a house or renovating your current house, then there are some things that you may want to think about when it comes to your doors. Those changes can make it easier for you to get around your own house.

Wider Door Frames

One problem that many walker and wheelchair users have is that they have problems going through doorways, especially in older houses. The recommended doorway width is at least 32". That should be measured from the open parts of the doorway, not from the outside of the frames. If you have an extra wide wheelchair, like a powered chair for someone who is a quadriplegic, you may want to make sure that the doorways are at least 36", as those chairs can have extra problems with narrower doorways. You will need to have a contractor come out to look at your current doorways before you make any changes so you can make sure you aren't affecting a loadbearing wall. There are ways to widen doorways in loadbearing walls, but it has to be done correctly.

Automatic Doors

You've seen automatic doors at the store, hospital, doctor's office, etc, but you may never have thought about putting them in your home. There are different ways that you can do it. One way is to have a sensor set so that the door will open as you approach it. That could be a pressure sensor or a motion sensor. Those sensors can be set so that your pets don't trigger the doors. However, you still may have to deal with the problem of setting them off accidentally when someone walks past the doors. Another option is to use a button on either side of the door. When you push the button, the door opens. They are harder to accidentally open. You can have the button set where it's easy to hit, even if that's not right by the door. That will the door open while you are getting to it.

If you use a wheelchair or walker, you know that it can be difficult dealing with doors in your house. If you are going to build a new house or reno the one you have, there are things to think about when it comes to your doors.
